Avoiding public WiFi is always the safest option. But, as we all know, it’s easier said than done—sometimes you have to connect.

When that happens, consider this list of best practices, compiled by FPN security experts.

Sed viverra ipsum nunc aliquet bibendum enim facilisis gravida. Diam phasellus vestibulum lorem sed risus ultricies. Magna sit amet purus gravida quis blandit. Arcu cursus vitae congue mauris. •     Make sure that your cybersecurity solution is up to date.
•     When connecting to public WiFi, your computer may ask if you want to enable sharing or allow your device to be seen by others on the network—always select “No.”
•     Ensure the sites you visit are using HTTPS. This means that the connection between you and the website is encrypted.
•     Avoid banking online until you are connected to a trusted or secured network, even when using HTTPS. Choose a WiFi connection that requires a password (often found in cafés or restaurants).
•     Ensure that your firewall is enabled.
•     When possible, enable two-factor authentication.
•     Don’t stay permanently signed in to your personal accounts when accessing public Wi-Fi. Doing so may expose you to digital threats.
